Music Ministry

“A verse may finde him, who a sermon flies, And turn delight into a sacrifice.”
— George Herbert

Musical worship is one of the most important things that happens in the church. The songs we sing together are not mere window dressing, but rather have a decisive role to play in shaping our beliefs and forming our souls. It is often the music that takes the teaching of the gospel beyond being merely information in our heads, and plants it as life-changing truth deep in our hearts. Therefore, we place a high value on musical worship when we gather each week.

The style of music at St John’s is not monolithic, but rather eclectic and flexible. It ranges from contemporary songs played on a guitar to traditional hymns accompanied by our world-class organ.

Our music minister and musicians work to choose hymns and songs to best serve our diverse community at each stage of its life, helping all of us to enter God’s presence with praise, confession, thanksgiving, and lament.

Choir

St John’s choir is a vital part of our music program, offering an opportunity for individuals of all ages and skill levels to engage with the rich Anglican choral tradition. The choir rehearses on Sundays after the morning service and sings regularly for services including Evensong (as part of our Twilight Music Series), Ash Wednesday, Easter, Advent, Christmas, and other Sunday services at St John's.
